Clinton, Sampson Co., Sept. 10, 1860. 62-lypd Patriots among Foliticians.—During the gene ral prevalence among politicians of this reckless and destructive party strife, there are yet among them some true patriots who think more of their country than of self. I will mention three who have endeared themselves to the people by their efforts to save the Union—John J. Crittenden, Stephen A. Douglas, and Thurlow Weed. Mr. Crittenden, in urging his plan of compro mise, declared that for his part, he would gladly give up any private or party opinion, if by so do ing he could save the country, Mr. Douglas declared his readiness to go about the work of effecting a compromise without refer ence to any speech he has ever made, or any vote he has ever given. Mr. Weed proposed a basis of comprjmise that was every way fair and honorable; and coming, as it did, from the leading editor of the victorious party, it exhibited a graceful magnanimity, which has unfortunately not been appreciated by the party.— Vorrespfjndence Journal of Conimercc. Sensation Dispatches.—We agree with the Savannah Republican, that, in these times oi popular excitement, when every floating rumor, however vague, is caught up by the Associated Press and individuals, and spread broadcast over the country, it is due to truth to warn the public against placing an undue amount of faith in the telegraphic dispatches which find their way into the^ papers. In fact, for weeks past, it has kept the telegraph busy to correct one day the statement made on the day previous. The truth is, that the telegraph is a monstrous swindle and a monstrous nuisance. Only evening before last, about eleven o’clock at night, we re ceived one or two despatches, containing veics that had reached us by mail the morning beforel If the Penitentiary had its due, these telegraphic villains would no longer swindle the press and humbug the community.—Rich. Whig. ^4« Old Church.—In company with a large concourse of the citizens ot this county, one of the Editors attended the funeral service of a lady who was buried, last Sabbath, in the grave yard . attached to the old McPherson church. Long before a house of worship was erected in Fayette ville, this church maintained a flourishing exist ence. Forty years ago, 3Ir. McDiarmid aud Mr, Lindsay preached to immense congregations, who* came from 10 to 20 miles to hear the word of life. A majority of the worshippers then spoke the Gaelic only, and a distinct service was always held for their benefit. The church is now in ruins, though the quaint old pulpit and sound ing baard still survive the wreck of time. It is proposed to rebuild the house and to collect an other congregation among the descendants of those who sleep in the crowded graveyard. A. C. Presbyterian, The Southern Pacijic Railroad.—There are now 270 hands employed in grading the road west of Marshall, Texas, and it was expected that, by the first of January, there would be a force of 500 employed. Besides, a considerable number in addition to this force are employed in getting out cross-ties, building bridges, &c. The sul>con- tractors have obligated themselves to complete 2*5 miles of road ready for the iron by the 1st of May. Capture o/ Tico Slacers.—The U. S. steamer Mohawk, Lt. Craven, captured the brig Tocoa, aud took her into Key West, last week. She was found completely fitted out as a slaver. The bark Mary I. Kimbal, from New Orleans, was captured by the same vessel, under the same cir cumstances, the next day. She was also carried to Key West. The missing U. S. Vessel Levant.—Command er Maury says that the long passage of the Le vant does ROt, in his judgment, justify the suppo sition that she is lost. He gives good reasons for his belief. Six Wagon Loads of Gold.—The gold which came to New York by the Persia, from Liverpool, during the time of the panic a week or two ago, upwards of ^3,100,000, weighed 11,700 pounds, and loaded six express wagons. It was quite a consolatory sight to the cramped merchants, in the height of hard times, to see six horses each pulling a wagon load of gold along Broadway. .4/1 Eccentric Millionaire.—Among the sub scribers to Audubon’s magnificent work, on orni thology, the subscription price of which" was l.OUO dollars a copy, appeared the name of John Jacob Astor. During the progress of the work, the pro secution of which was exceedingly expensive, M. Audubon, of course, called upon several of his subscribers for payment. It so happened that Mr. Astor (probably that he might not be troubled about small matters) was not applied to before the delivery of the letter-press and plates. Then, however, Audubon asked for his thousand dollars but he was put off with one excuse or another. “Ah, M. Audubon,” would the owner of millions observe, “you have come at a bad timej money is very scarce; I have nothing in bank; 1 have in vested all my funds,” At length, for a sixth time, Audubon called on Astor for his thousand dollars. As he was ushered into the presence, he found William B. Astor, the son, conversing with his father. No sooner did the rich man. see the man of art, than he began, “Ah, M, Audubon, so you have come again after your money. Hard times, M. Audubon—money scarce.” But just then, catching an inquiring look from his son, he changed his tone: “However, M. Audubon, I suppose we must contrive to let you have some of your money if possible. William,^’ he added, calling to his son, who had walked into an ad joining parlor, “have we any money at all in the bank?” “Yes, father,” replied the son, suppos ing that he was asking an earn&st question perti nent to what they had been talking about when the ornithologist came in, “we have two hundred aud seventy thousand dollars in the liank of New York, sevenrty thousand dollars in the City Bank, ninety thousand in the Merchants’, ninety-eight thousand four hundred in the Mechanics’, eighty- three thousand .” “That’ll do, that’ll do,” £, J.
